1) How regularly should I visit my Dentist?

A: A dental check up is mandatory every 6 months. This is because a dentist may be the first to sight-
         New Cavities
         Tartar Accumulation
         Gum Problems
Any other Oral problems in the oral cavity

2) Why do teeth decay in spite of me brushing regularly?
A: Dental decay is caused due to various reasons :
        Improper oral cleaning
        Improper brushing technique
Dietary factors like eating excessive sweets and not washing off the accumulated food on teeth.
        Hereditary factors .
So in spite of brushing regularly you may have dental decay. It is very essential to visit your dentist every 6 months to keep your teeth decay in check.

3) What are the common means of replacing missing teeth?
A: Missing teeth may be replaced by a Fixed Partial Denture (FPD) ,removable denture or an implant. A FPD is commonly called bridge. A removable denture may be partial or complete. A removable partial denture (RPD) is given, when a bridge is not a ideal choice for the patient. It is made in acrylic (a type of plastic) or cast in a metal which is well accepted by the body. A complete denture (CD) may be needed when no teeth are left in the mouth.
Sometimes a CD is made with support of two or more teeth left behind known as overdenture.

4) What Are Crowns?
A: A crown is a restoration that covers, or "caps," a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the appearance of a tooth.

5) What is a bridge?
A: A bridge is a dental appliance that replaces one or more natural missing teeth, thereby "bridging" the space between two teeth.

6)How should I take care of my crowns/ bridge?
A: To prevent damaging or fracturing the crowns/ bridge-

Do not chew hard foods on the restorations for 24 hours from the time they were cemented to attain optimum strength, the cement must mature for approximately 24 hours.
Do not worry about mild sensitivity to hot or cold foods. This sensitivity will disappear gradually over a few weeks. Infrequently, sensitivity last longer than six weeks.
Avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects.
Avoid teeth grinding.
Brush and floss twice a day
Use a proxybrush (interdental brush) to clean around the area after each meal
Fluoride rinse is to be used for atleast one minute before bed. Do not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes.
Visit your dentist regularly

7:What can be done about the gap present between two front upper teeth?
A The gap can be closed absolutely well to give a natural look. Depending on the size of the gap it may be treated with composite (a tooth color material), or crowns (ceramic or metal + ceramic) or laminates (a thin covering using ceramic). The gap may also be closed using certain type of braces (Orthodontic Treatment):

8) What are dental implants?
A:Dental implants are (titanium) substitutes for natural tooth roots. One implant can support one porcelain tooth; two or more implants can support a fixed porcelain bridge or a removable denture.

9) How many teeth can be replaced by implants?
A: One, two or all teeth can be replaced with implants. Porcelain fixed teeth similar to the natural teeth can be fixed on these implants. There is nothing in dentistry that resembles and feels as natural as implant supported porcelain teeth.

10)What are the oral benefits of dental implant?
A: Cases untreatable with conventional methods of dental bridges and dentures can be treated.

It prevents further resorption of the jawbone following tooth loss.
It can perfectly restore chewing function.
It helps restore a patient’s self-esteem and confidence since it gives  the feeling of regaining the                natural teeth.
It functions better than conventional dental bridges and dentures.
            It gives superior aesthetic results.

11)Must special care be given to these implants?
A:
Brush your teeth and gums regularly
            use dental floss around implants
have a professional dental cleaning four (4) times a year.

12:)How long does an implant last?
A:If successfully placed, the success rate of implants is of 95-100% Like natural teeth, they may last for a lifetime if properly taken care of. Factors that may adversely affect implants are diabetes, smoking, and radiation for cancer disease, liver disease and lack of compliance on the part of the patient with hygiene instructions.

13)Are there dietary restrictions?
A:Yes, patients must eat mashed-type foods rich in vitamins, proteins and minerals to ensure a fast recovery without any complication. Refraining from smoking helps blood circulation in the gums thus making it possible for the wound to heal without complications.

14:)the operation safe fro implant placement?
A:No medical treatment can be guaranteed 100 percent without risks and failures, implant operation can be considered very safe. The prosthetic phase of treatment is basically non-invasive and non-surgical in nature.

15)What is orthodontic treatment?
A:Orthodontics deals with correction of irregular teeth structure or malformed teeth to bring about better facial appearance. Depending on the position, various alternative treatment options of fixed or removable are suggested .

16)How long will orthodontic treatment take?
A:Orthodontic treatment may involve moving a single tooth or it can involve jaw surgery. Usually braces need to be kept for 6 - 24 months with orthodontic adjustments and monitoring every 4 to 8 weeks. This is followed by placing a retainer to hold the teeth in their new position for further periods of up to 18 months.

17)What is the right age for Orthodontic Treatment?
A:Early treatment (for 7- 9 year olds) could result in shorter and less complicated procedure. The treatment attempts to influence bone growth for better and faster results. Treatments for teenagers are are very effective. Treatments for adults are longer than for children. However, a vast majority of those taking Orthodontic treatments are still adults.

18)What is Scaling?
A:Scaling is the procedure of removing calculus/tartar deposition on teeth.

19) What is plaque?
A:Plaque is a sticky material formed by mucus, saliva, food particles and bacteria which sticks on the surface of teeth.

20) What is tartar?
A:Tartar is mineralized plaque. This is the yellowish-brown, hard substance that forms usually on the inner surface of the teeth, between the teeth and the gum when calcium from the saliva attaches to the teeth. It cannot be removed by a toothbrush or floss and normally requires the expertise of a dentist for removal.

21)Why do gums bleed?
A:Commonly speaking bleeding gums may be due to unhealthy gums caused by the deposition of tartar around and under the gums. Bleeding gums can also arise due to some improper contact of the opposing teeth and deficiency of Vitamin C.

22)What all dental problems can cause bad breath?
A:Deposition of plaque/calculus on teeth, swelling of the gums, periodontal problems, tooth abscess and cavities in tooth can cause bad breath. Other than dental problems, bad breath can be caused by throat / ear infection, sinusitis and gastric problems.

23)why do I feel constant severe pain and pressure with my gums swollen?
A: Tooth abscess is likely which causes surrounding gum and bone to become infected. Meet your dentist for an immediate evaluation and treatment.

24) What is Endodontics?
A:Endodontics deals with treatments like crowning/capping, inlays, outlays, root canal treatments and restorations.

25) What is Cavity and how is it caused?
A:The loss of enamel surface of tooth due to action of plaque or due to improper brushing is called cavity. The acid attacks the soft inner layer of tooth causing severe pain. Bacteria could infect the inner pulp of teeth and destroy nerves. There could be bad breath and bad taste in mouth.

26) What should be done if cavities are formed?

A:The carious or decayed part of tooth has to be removed and cavities filled.

27)What happens if cavities are left untreated?
A:Bacteria could infect the inner pulp of teeth and destroy nerves. This would require root canal therapy to remove damaged nerves.

28) What is root canal treatment?
 A
A:Root canal treatment is advised when-
A tooth that has become infected resulting in pus formation at the root of the teeth.
Tooth dacay leads to exposed pulp.
The procedure, removes the infected nerves and tissues from inside the tooth. The tooth can remain in the mouth.

29)I have chronic pain in head, neck or ears. Why?
A:This could be due to damaged tooth pulp. Consult your dentist who will refer you to a specialist, in the event of any other problem.

30) My teeth are sensitive to hot, cold or sweet food.
A:The sensitivity could be due to gum recession which exposes small areas of root surface, a loose filling or tooth decay. Unattended decay, tends to eat away the "enamel" of teeth. The next layer of teeth is called dentine which is highly sensitive to extremes of temperature. This situation might give rise to sharp pain, when exposed to temperature. Left unattended it may give rise to more serious problems. temperature. Left unattended it may give rise to more serious problems.

31) I get sharp pain while eating food.
A:It may be due to tooth decay, a loose filling, damage to tooth pulp tissue or a crack in tooth.

32) When is tooth extraction necessary?
A:Tooth extraction becomes necessary -

If the tooth is badly infected and root canal treatment is not possible, tooth has to be extracted.
In the case of problematic wisdom teeth.
           For certain therapeutic purposes.

33) Is an artificial tooth fixed at the point of extracted tooth? When is this done?
A:Yes, artificial tooth can be fixed immediately after extraction.

34) Isn’t tooth extraction very painful?

A:Tooth extraction is a minor surgical procedure. Your dentist will apply local anesthesia causing numbness in mouth and also use antibiotics. Hence, you will not feel any pain. After the extraction, there could be some discomfort which is natural.

35)How important are baby teeth ?
A: Baby teeth are very important. Most of us tend to ignore the health of baby teeth thinking that they are going fall out. but once ignored the baby teeth tend to decay which may cause pain to the child, the child may not eat proper finally effecting the child's health. Also baby teeth act as space maintainers for permanent teeth. Removal of baby teeth may cause closure of spaces for permanent teeth to erupt leading to crowding of the permanent teeth. When front baby teeth are missing the child may develop speech problems, may lack confidence, may develop an altered lip support etc. Thus care for baby teeth is of utmost importance.

36)Why does my baby get diarrhoea during the teething period ?
A:During the teething period the baby is restless and there is an itchy sensation in the mouth. To curb this irritation the baby tends to chew on various objects which may be unclean. In such cases bacteria travel within the baby's body through the oral cavity. This most frequently leads to diarrhoea.

37)How can I have a more beautiful smile within a few hours?
A: A brighter smile may be achieved by a simple procedure of bleaching. This can be done at home too thus saving your time of visiting the dentist. Crooked and broken teeth may be straightened with the help of cosmetic fillings, a veneering combined with cosmetic contouring.
Your smile is one of the most important aspects of your appearance. It's the cornerstone of your expression, not to mention the first thing people notice about you. This is why we offer many advanced procedures for enhancing, preserving or even restoring your beautiful smile.

Post Operative information for
restorative procedures:

Following a procedure to restore your tooth –

1)
Whether it be a filling, crown or bridge - you should realize that there is a certain amount of trauma/irritation that your nerve may encounter. This is usually a factor of the amount of decay and the size of the previous filling material. If you started with a cold sensitive tooth, post operative sensitivity may be more common. Following restoration of your tooth/teeth, you may experience some of the following:
2)

Thermal sensitivity either cold and/or hot: This is not of much concern if the sensitivity only last for a few seconds.
3)
Biting sensitivity: The most common cause of this is when the bite is a bit high. Sometimes it can be hard to duplicate the correct bite.
4)

Jaw pain and headaches: This is usually a sign that the bite is high and you are grinding/clenching on the new restoration(s)
5)

Prolonged thermal sensitivity and/or throbbing pain: This may be a sign that the insult to the nerve was more than it could endure.
6)

After a procedure, if you feel that the bite is not correct, let us know within a week. If you ignore this sign, then you risk further trauma to your tooth as well as possible fracture of the new restoration.

Post Operative information for root
canal procedures:

Following your root canal procedure, you should expect all thermal sensitivity for that tooth to disappear. For 95% of all root canal treated teeth, all symptoms should begin to disappear and subside within three days. 5% of root canal treated teeth will show postoperative sensitivity resulting in pain on biting as well as possible swelling. This may occur even in the event that the root canal procedure was entirely successful. We recommend you take a basic anti-inflammatory agent (we recommend advil/ibuprofin; 400mg every six hours) for up to two days, in order to greatly reduce postoperative discomfort.
In the event that you are experiencing rapidly progressing pain and swelling after a root canal procedure, we recommend that you call your dentist as soon as possible. It is very likely that antibiotic therapy will be required at this point. Please have the phone number of your local pharmacy handy as the dentist will need this in order to phone in your prescription. Also, in the event that your call is after hours and your dentist is away from the office, please remind the dentist if you have any antibiotic allergies. Usually, the pharmacist will have this information on hand anyways.
It is important to note, that root canal treatment has a 98% success rate on the first treatment. Approximately 0.5% of root canal treated teeth will require extraction at some point. This is an inescapable statistic as with all other medical treatments.
